Where to watch near Tromsø
Without a car
Prestvannet (20–30 minutes’ walk, or bus 28 or 40), Telegrafbukta (about 35 minutes’ walk, or bus 33 out and 34 back) and Rundvannet (bus 20 or 42) all have buses back to the centre until about midnight from Sunday to Thursday, and until about 3 am on Friday and Saturday nights. None of them is fully dark, so they suit a clear night with good activity. The darker spots on Kvaløya below are harder: the last bus back from Ersfjordbotn leaves at 20:48 Monday to Friday and 18:48 on Saturdays, with none on Sundays, and Grøtfjord and Kattfjordvatnet have no evening bus. Holidays differ, so check your date on Entur. From Entur for winter 2026–27; checked 28 October 2026.

Times are typical, from the centre of Tromsø by road or path rather than in a straight line, and winter conditions can make them longer. Walking times don’t mean a route is lit or safe on foot in winter; check each spot’s notes.

The share of nights with at least two dark hours under 30% cloud cover, averaged by month over 1996–2025. It describes cloud, not aurora: a clear night still needs activity. A dash means no record for that month, usually because it doesn’t get dark. About this record
Questions
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Tromsø?
In the dark months. Over 1996–2025, a clear spell after dark was likeliest in January and December, on about 27% of nights. That record is about cloud only: on any one night, the cloud and the activity forecast matter more than the season, so check on the day.
